Education in Faith
In the gospel this week Jesus allowed his closest friends to glimpse the power and brilliance of God’s glory. This is the glory awaiting us if we remain faithful to Jesus. What did Peter, James and John see on the mountaintop? Jesus’ appearance changed in front of their eyes, his face and clothing shone like the sun - Jesus was transfigured! God then appeared to the apostles telling them that Jesus is his beloved Son and that they should listen to him. This event on the mountaintop helped the apostles to finally understand who Jesus really was. How can we simplify this story for the children? Think about the sun; if the sun shines in our eyes, we are dazzled by its brightness and the strength of its light. Without the light, the world would be cold and dark, we chase the light and its warmth. This is how it is with Jesus; we are dazzled by his strength and his brightness. Just as the light chases away the darkness so that we can see, Jesus’ light made the disciples see that he was the Son of God and that our lives will be brightened through God’s love.
