At first glance, all of the weekend's readings are particularly grim and disheartening. When you dig a little deeper the message is that we will struggle with life, sometimes be disheartened, but we need to ‘persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.’ We know that God loves us and we rejoice in being God’s children. Being a Christian, particularly today, will often be difficult. It is important to remember that it is okay sometimes to feel discouraged, that it is quite normal. By keeping our eyes fixed on the end of the ‘running race’ we will persevere to reach our reward. This is crucial for our children to understand as well; it is okay for them to feel discouraged at times but by focusing on the race they will develop the skills to get back up and persist at the tasks.
